You’ll see many cats in Zanzibar; cats are everywhere. They won’t bother you, they won’t beg for scraps of food, they are not importunate. But then cats rarely are, are they…
Instead, Zanzibari cats proved to be excellent motifs for the camera and very worthy subjects for our little Cats of the World series here at Sophie’s World.
It is not worth the while to go round the world to count the cats in Zanzibar
Familiar quote? It’s Henry David Thoreau in his book Walden.
Now, I adored Zanzibar and its cats. But did the good Henry David really have these tabbies in mind? Probably not. Rather, he was saying that instead of going around the world to find a solution to one’s problems – one should perhaps look within.
I’ll leave you with a few more of Zanzibar’s fabulous felines and Henry David’s words. Because poetry and cats do seem to go together well.
It is not worth the while to go round the world to count the cats in Zanzibar. Yet do this even till you can do better, and you may perhaps find some “Symmes’ Hole” by which to get at the inside at last. England and France, Spain and Portugal, Gold Coast and Slave Coast, all front on this private sea; but no bark from them has ventured out of sight of land, though it is without doubt the direct way to India. If you would learn to speak all tongues and conform to customs of all nations, if you would travel farther than all travellers, be naturalized in all climes, and cause the Sphinx to dash her head against a stone, even obey the precept of the old philosopher, and Explore thyself. Herein are demanded the eye and the nerve. Only the defeated and deserters go to the wars, cowards that run away and enlist. Start now on that farthest western way, which does not pause at the Mississippi or the Pacific, nor conduct toward a worn-out China or Japan, but leads on direct, a tangent to this sphere, summer and winter, day and night, sun down, moon down, and at last earth down too.
Cute 🙂
Love cats 🙂
Love the writing. And the cats – although most of them seem to be in need of some food and worming tablets.
Some did look a bit underfed.
Cats are everywhere in Zanzibar.. 🙂
They are – but unobtrusively so, I thought.
I am a huge cat lover, so these felines from Zanzibar are definitely fabulous, I agree! The poetry is inspiring as well. There a lot of people who travel to find something, but they often maybe find something else!
Too true, Vanessa.
You’ve captured all of them with their curious eyes, very cool!
Thanks 🙂
Cute

Went to Zanzibar. Counted the cats; sometimes more than thirty of them visible when the volunteers were giving them food. Transported one wounded cat to Paka-Clinic with my zanzibarian friend on my motorcycle (it did not survive; serious spine injury caused by a car). Zanzibarian cats are appreciated and feeded by the locals much better than I have ever seen in other parts of the world. Anyway, the recources are low so they need help for their excellent work. Please, take a look at the work of this Paka-clinic and send some contribution if you feel so.
Good to hear they’re looked after and thanks for letting us know. I’ve shared info on Paka Clinic on social media.
