In transit: in the waiting room

When is it too late to let someone (strangers around a communal waiting room table) know you speak their language? Been sitting next to a French couple and I’m sure they wouldn’t have discussed some of the things they have – and in such detail! – if they knew I understood.

Then their adorable 2-3 y-o daughter asks me to get a pear for her (she can’t reach the fruit basket), and I say ‘Bien sûr, ma petite,’ without even thinking!

More awkward for me than for them, I think. Or perhaps they just have awkward down to a fine art.
