Welcome to Sophie’s World

– a blog about the world’s curious and often unsung corners. And travel with kids. I (Sophie, that is) write the majority of the articles. But, perhaps unusually for a travel blog, the kids – Alexandra (no longer a kid, really) and Catarina (11) often share their take on things, too.

Looking for travel inspiration? You’ll find travel stories from Africa, the Americas, the Arctic, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Australia/Oceania. Perhaps you’re interested in cities, ghost towns or spooky places, counting cats in Zanzibar, horse riding or how to make chocolate? Just start clicking – on anything you want.

Curious corners

We aim to entertain you with tales from around the world, but perhaps most especially from places that may be less familiar. At Sophie’s World, we’re fascinated by the world’s more remote and often unsung spots, such as Skopje, Chisinau, Vaduz, Pristina, Maseru and Nuku’alofa. Heard of them? They’re all national capitals.

Other interesting and remote outposts we’ve been fortunate to experience include Arctic Svalbard, the Faroe Islands, the Azores, Norfolk Island, Srpskathe five lesser-known Arab emirates, Caucasus, and the somewhat obscure non-country Transdniestr.

Travelling with children

Sophie’s World is also about showing how the exhilarating world of travel need not diminish once you have children. In fact, children and travel can easily be combined. (Hint: It’s all about compromise. And enduring the occasional meal at unmentionable fast food joints.) You can find a few general tips in this article.
